Pontiac 6000 radio keeps getting soft

Asked by 19866000ste Jul 08, 2018 at 10:06 PM about the 1986 Pontiac 6000 STE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The radio of my '86 Pontiac 6000 STE starts out extremely soft when I start the
car, then after a little while suddenly goes back to full volume. While it's soft, I
turn it up to hear it & I also hear intermittent noise almost like static that cuts in
and out. Sometimes it gets soft (when it's loud) or gets loud (when it's soft)
when I hit a bump in the road.

Do you know if the audio system in this car has a setting to modify the volume based on the speed (noise level) of the car? Check and see. It would explain the diminished volume when stopped or going slow and the louder setting as you increase your speed.

No, it does not. It is not related to speed. It seems to be after a period of time. Also, it's not gradual, it is SUDDENLY soft, or SUDDENLY loud. And as indicated in above question, SOMETIMES when I hit a bump in the road, it seems to trigger the change.

Then start checking all connectors feeding to and from the radio for positive contact. After that, pull the radio and send it to a repair shop. Could be a component on the audio boards/circuits.
