How do i tell what size and year an engine is by the numbers on the block

I recently purchased a 1985 el Camino only to find someone changed the intake, timing
cover and harmonic balancer. I need to set the timing and ensure the spark plus wiring is
correct. the new intake has no firing order on it so I need some help

Look on the rear right hand side of engine (driver side, that's where it was for my '69) on the lip that bolts to tranny you will find casting numbers. write those down and look them up here. http://home.znet.com/c1937/Cast.htm ...it doesn't tell size but it should help find it.

Your answer makes no sense, you state the number is on rear right hand side(drivers side) the drivers side is on the left
