1981 elcamino

I purchased an 81 elcam 4 years ago, thought it was a 305, nope, 267 V, the Vin on the car states it was a V6, have heard from people that in those days if they ran out of ..in my case V6's on the line, they would throw a V8 in? this 267 fits and it is also a 4 barrel didn't see that as an option it those days, so did they do that on the assembly line? just curious, it's a Conquista model,
