Yep. they both use the 1.6 L I4 95 hp engine, the second generation didn't come along until 1999. Don't let that 95hp figure fool you the thing weighs as much as a bicycle and it is plenty of power. It's not designed to go fast, you will die young trying

thanks, my 1997 geo tracker motor is bad, however i found one , the guy said it will fit a1992- 1995 but it will not fit my 1997, what do you think?

The engine might be different. The original engines were 80hp --- I found the following ---- "Although Suzuki started importing Sidekick 4-doors in 1991 CAMI didn't start producing them until the 1996 model year, when America got a 4-door Geo Tracker, now powered by Suzuki's G16B 16-valve 1.6L boasting 96 hp (72 kW). " --- That doesn't necessarily mean the new engine will not fit - it could be the same block with a little more power.

We bought a used one off Ebay for $700.00 for our 96, they shipped it to a transfer facility who put it in the bed of my truck. you should do the same unless you have a chain fall or forklift at your house. 90% overhaul and dropped it in. Found out in the process the Chilton manual has it's engines confused so I stopped using it and started utilizing Tracker forums. I found out after I spent a bunch of time on the motor that it was a 97, I switched the intakes because the wiring connection is different but it starts and sounds great. The tough part is spending the additional $400 on a new TPS and IACV, which I discovered later in my research if the TPS goes bad then the IACV is next and causes the engine to shut off when at stop lights ect...Good luck and have fun with it!

92-98 is the same motor, the valve head is the only difference. I used a 96 engine block from a 16 valve on my 92 tracker with an 8 valve. FB has a great group of tracker enthusiast and parts sellers if you need more info.
