Your S-10 is an OBD I computer system. You need a code reader that can read OBD I vehicles (1981 thru 1995). Or you can use a paperclip to flash out the codes. With the ignition off insert the paperclip in the two upper right holes of the ALDL connector under the dash near the steering column. Now turn on the ignition but don't try to start the engine. The check engine light will begin flashing the reference code 12 to let you know you are in diagnostic mode. It will appear as flash (pause), flash, flash. Code 12 will flash out three times. Then there's a long pause and any stored, two digit, trouble codes will begin flashing out three times each in numerical order from lowest to highest. Once all the codes have flashed out, code 12 will begin flashing again. If, for example you have a code 34 in there it will flash out as flash, flash, flash (pause) flash, flash, flash, flash. Once it has flashed out three times there will be a long pause and the next stored code will begin flashing out. Once code 12 begins flashing a second time you can shut off the ignition and remove the paperclip. Below is a picture of the ALDL connector. The check gauges light is on because of the broken gauge. If any gauge, except the gas gauge, reads in the danger zone the check gauges light will come on. HTH. -Jim
