Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 89 f150 4.9 inline 6 300::: there is fire going from coil to distributor,
but not coming out of distributor. My father owns the truck and we have tried
everything we can think of. My Dad is 76 years old and loves this truck , has
had the truck for over 6 months and has yet to be able to drive it . Just one
thing after another has went wrong. We wound up having to replace the
engine and now this is happening . Can some one please tell me how to
correct this for my Dad.

Check the cap and make sure it is not cracked. If cracked, replace. Check the rotor and make sure it is not broken and making contact with the points on the cap. With the cap removed, crank the engine ensuring the rotor is turning. If not turning, the gear or pin driving the rotor may be broken/damaged.
