Needs a new engine; how hard would it be to replace?

My '93 Eagle Talon ES (2.0 L
4cylinder non turbo engine FWD-
manual) broke down on the side of
the road and the repair shop told me
I needed a whole new engine and
they wanted I charge me $2800 for
the new engine and $1500 for labor. I
know I could get an engine for half
that price elsewhere and I found a
place that rents out engine hoists
cheap so I was hoping I could maybe
have my dad do it himself. But my
dad says he can't because heard a
rumor that replacing the engine is
supposedly not something we could
do ourselves because it has to be
dropped out the bottom of the car??
I've tried to look it up but all I can
find related to the Turbo AWD engine.

For $2,800 I would hope that's a fully rebuilt engine. You can often pick up used non-turbo 4G63 engines for ~ $500 in decent shape from any JDM shop (imported from Japan). There's no need to drop the engine as they are easily lifted from the top, especially being fwd, it will be much quicker. Being your dad has no experience, it should take him no longer than a full weekend. Someone who's done it a few times, looking at having it done and back on the road before the day is over, while taking your time cleaning everything up.
