2014 Ford Mustang Check Charging System

Asked by InfantryWife Sep 19, 2017 at 04:31 PM about the 2014 Ford Mustang V6 Coupe RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I purchased my 2014 Mustang with only 5,000 miles
on it.  At 53,000 miles and almost 3 years later the
alternator went out. Mind you the Check Charging
System lights came on intermittently and about 2
weeks later the car completely quit. My mechanic
replaced the alternator & battery but the check
charging system light still comes on and alerts me
several times in a single trip. I'm reading there's not
a way to truly test the alternator, so how do I know
if it will leave me stranded? Do I need to do
something with the grounding wires? I read
something about cleaning plugs? Is there a fix all??
Something besides having a spare alternator???

Take it back to a mechanic. It still may be an issue with the alternator.

That's wired because your mechanic should have had the ability to test the alternator while it was running in the vehicle. You can go to your local O'Reilly's or AutoZone and have them test it for free along with the battery. They can check the voltage in the amperage during that test. As far as your light still being on that would be another issue unless something is still wrong with your charging system. You can check for open fuses in your fuse box under the hood and inside but your mechanic should have done that. Something you can can try after that test is to disconnect your battery cables for 10 minutes and right before you reattach them short the cables together momentarily then reattach them to the battery. This will reset the computer in might solve your problem. You can also get them to do a code scan and see if anything else pops up. If there is anything write the code down and have them clear the codes.

Make sure the LIN wire form the altinator is good and not broken or damaged. Trace it back to the pcm and check the fuses for the altinator
