Asked by Oct 23, 2019 at 09:28 AM about the 2013 Toyota Avalon XLE Touring

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

we have replaced 4 batters on our 2013 Avalon with only 47271 miles. orig.
  #2 battery replaced on 11/18/2015  17210 miles  #3  4/14/17  26845 miles
#3 10/22/2019 47271   serviced every 5000 miles   every time they say every
thing checks out. on 10/22/2019 my wife was getting off x way and every
thing shut down. no steering or brakes . she is now afraid to drive it she is 72
years old. I think that Toyota's alternator  does not have enough out put at
idle to keep the car running .

A few possibilities. You could be driving too short of trips and battery can't charge. I had a Mercedes and bought a low price battery charger and had the dealer install it for less than $75. You could also have a bad ground and just need tightening. I have a Venza and most Toyotas are bulletproof. Gary 73 yo.

Has a shop checked the actual charging system? Batteries today are not the best and 4 years is about all you will get out of even the best battery. So get the charging system tested at a shop not someplace like autozone as they don't really get into diode and such. If it checks good then get a battery maintainer installed so when it is setting the battery can be maintained at full charge. Now how fancy you want to go is up to you, some are really cheap while others have a lot of bells and whistles and cost more, I've even seen solar ones that set inside the car and plug into the power port, but the car has to be outside in the sun for these to work. Good luck.
