91 Dodge stealth rt

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My tension pulley bearing
shredded and my timing jumped. I
have tried to retime the motor but
can't get it to time. I took it to a
shop and was told that I had a
bent valve. But when I looked
under the hood, I found out the
mechanic lied about putting
everything back on. So I did some
research and learned it is not a
beer valve as I can turn my cams
without them looking up. I need to
get my car back on the road. Any

Not knowing which engine, you may have an "interference" engine or not, and it doesn't take mush of a bend to screw up an engine. If so, your valves might all be slightly bent. Pull a couple of plugs and stick in an investigation light. If you can't see, use a camera. You could also put in a fat Q-tip or pipe cleaner soaked with oil. Swish it around and see if it picks up any valve shrapnel. You're probably better off just to pull one head. Actually getting back timing shouldn't be tough if the engine's OK.

My bad. It has an ECI 3000 V6 24 valve DOHC. I pulled off both heads and had someone turn my cams and all of the valves moved freely.

I just checked and your DOHC engine IS interference, and it doesn't take much of a piston tap to knock a valve out of line (doesn't seat properly). It might look like it's OK by spinning the cams, but when you try to set lash, you'll see it's all f..... up. I'm hoping for the best for you, but not optimistic.

Beer valve? He probably did not put it back together because there was no point. Do a compression test to verify bent valves. If the engine skipped time and the timing jumped you may not be able to do a compression test. I would talk to the mechanic who looked at your engine to get the whole story.

If the heads are off have a machine shop look at them.

I'll have to contact my other mechanic to look at it since the original guy isn't answering my calls. Thanks for all of the help y'all.
