1984 Volkswagen Vanagon

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

1984 Volkswagen Vanagon runs great until unpredictably it just loses power for unpredictable amount of time (5 minutes... 1 hour... 1 day? or?) and then kicks back into action and drives fine until?
I inherited this lovely vehicle (and it is in very nice condition except for this...) from my partner who passed away 10 months ago and I need to sell it for money to live on so I don't want to sell it for "nothing" relative to its actual value. It passed Smog several months ago. The Catalytic Converter and the Oxygen Sensor were both replaced in an effort to resolve this problem yet it persists. I don't even know how to sell it or what to sell it for with this issue or?

Hi, I am the original owner of a 1990 Vanagon. My mileage Is nearing 260,000. I experienced the problem you described several years ago and it has occurred about 6 times that I recall. We live in Washington state and drive to Baja California. I found that driving between 55-65 mph seems to alleviate this problem. It would slow down to 3-5 mph and playing between the clutch and the accelerator for a few minutes it would kick in and be ok. Our main concern now is knowing how much longer we can rely on the engine before we need to replace it. Some people seem surprised that we have driven this far with no major problems. What are your thoughts. Thank you, Ron Mount rdmount@yahoo.com
