my gas gauge is digital and it goes from 11 to E in a second, also can go up or down with the reading depending on which way the car is leaning. That aside - it's just a float in the tank that moves up and down and transfers where it's at to the dashboard. If your's is digital and lit up then it's the sensor in the tank or the connection between there and the dash. If it's a dial and it's right on E give it a tap (ever see the movie The China Syndrome?)

If you can't fix it easily, remember - it's only a convenience, it's not an essential.
