Temperature Gauge

I was looking at buying this 1988 Lincoln Town Car Signature.  The car is in excellent condition, went
for test drive and and drove smoothly except for one thing.  The temperature gauge was running
relatively high.  Unlike newer cars, this older town cars temp gauge has the "C" on the bottom and the
"H" on the top.  Whats different is that between the "C" and the "H" it reads (and literally spells out) the  
word normal.  But the "problem" is the needle for the gauge isn't in the center between the "C" and "H",
and got very close to the "H", but was technically in the "normal" zone.  Thought someone might be
able to help out.  and the cars has 74,000 original miles on it, and no accidents.  Thanks

someone at replaceing the stat.wanted more heater and used a higher temp

Have your mechanic check the actual temperature at he pre-purchase inspection. Many gauges are not all that accurate. Make sure that there is a problem before you try to correct it.

I'm going with tenspeed on this one, he is right. Does it have those bars that go up and down? Or is is actually a needle? I had '90 and the temp gauge was indeed inaccurate, but it had, like I described, bars that lit from bottom to top as the engine warmed up, more bars lit, hotter coolant, gas gauge same way, lit bars in a box than more bars more gas
