Our Lincoln Mark VII Decklids (trunks) utilize two steel torsion bars (LH and RH) to regulate the speed and strength of raising and lowering them. Each bar is installed with a considerable amount of torque. As of this writing, the youngest torsion bar was installed in 1992 and is currently 28 years old. When improperly handled, these bars have been known to break or shatter! When properly handled, adjustment takes about ten minutes :) Each bar has three possible settings below and forward of the Luggage Compartment Door Hinge. Note their positions before beginning. Torsion bars (left hand to right hand) should only be ONE notch setting apart at the most! Pre 1988 torsion bars left the factory adjusted to only raise the decklid an inch or two above the latch. This is the highest settings. Torsion bars should be adjusted only ONE BAR and ONE NOTCH at a time and then thoroughly tested before continuing. See our Shop Manual 44-41 for more details. WHEN IN DOUBT, TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP.
