Knock in the engine and oil leak

Asked by Jun 17, 2017 at 10:57 AM about the 1984 Mercedes-Benz 190-Class 190D 2.2 Diesel Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I got a Mercedes 190D last fall I let it sit over the winter
and I just pulled it out put a battery in it and fired it up.
Previous owners said they think it's something with the
timing chain but it fires right up with a knock in the engine(
I don't know if it's just because it's a diesel) but it
sounded better as I let it idle longer. I took it down the
road and it seemed like it ran fine but when I parked it it
started leaking oil( I think because previous owners let it
sit several years then I had it and it sat but I think the oil
seal dry rotted and cracked, but if anyone thinks it's
something else please chime in) other than that again I
feel like it runs fine. Any suggestions I should do? Without
dropping a ton of money?
