Engine light came on & won't shift into 3rd gear

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was driving the car & (!)light came on. Then the car
wouldn't shift into 3rd gear(it's an automatic). As I was
driving, the heat/ac was off but I was feeling cold air
coming out from where my feet are at. We just bought the
car 2 days ago from a private owner. Once I got home, the
engine light came on too. I don't know what this means. I
don't know much about cars.
