When I press the brake pedal the
car "hops"

The front of the car hops?

JerKS maybe is a better word

If it jerks left or right, brake caliper sticks... Jerks up and down brake rotors warped.

What would cause calipers to lock up?

Have new information....lots of play in the wheel and when car is parked can move tire side to side with my hands

Caliper--- getting to hot, breaking to hard, old, tire moving side to side --- sounds like ball joints. Or tie rod ends.
