a friend is trying to sell me their 1997 BMW 328i for $3000 and it has 328,000 mi. Is the car worth that?

Asked by aquable Feb 06, 2013 at 03:34 PM about the 1997 BMW M3 Sedan RWD

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

He said he has replaced all the expensive parts of the vehicle himself and that it will run for at least another 500000 miles. He also said he will include a 6 month warrenty and free oil change for a year.  I think he has good intentions but I dont have enough information to make a sound decision.

If the car was worth three large, your friend would not throw in a six month warranty and oil changes. That is a lot of miles even for a BMW.

500k...eh? Wierd things begin to go bad with high mlieage like the steering wheel bearing, and the pivot point on the brake gets sloppy. My TAXI 70 Chevy had 300,000 on it and things went a sloppy was like driving a moist sponge.. 500k seems like a fantasy.

I suggest you first do a price comparison on autotrader.ca to see how much other 97 M3's are selling for with similar kms. You can probably buy one with less kms for the same price. Your buddy probably does have good intentions but he also wants to get rid of his car. Personally, there are few vehicles that I'd be comfortable buying with high kms...I wouldn't do it. Not to mention the cost of insuring an M3...too many cons for me.

I just deleted my other post because I read it wrong. NO, I REPEAT, NO 328i is worth that much with so many miles. I can think of several other cars well within your budget with lower miles. Don't buy it just because it's a BMW cause that really doesnt prove anything when it breaks in 4 hours. It may be fine, but don't risk it.

I wouldn't pay that much for a car with such a high mileage, sure the car can do another 500k miles but it will need a lot of stuff replaced in those miles. Probably anything mechanical will end up needing to be renewed, from the suspension all the way up to the cylinderheads. If you have a complete service and repair history on the car it's not even worth 2k, let alone 3, even with 6 months of warranty and free oil changes for a year (which in all reality will be no more than two).
