Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Just bought a 1993 dodge Dakota reg
cab and it starts but sounds like its
choking and misfiring and the sound
is coming from behind the cab
almost like the exhaust, I can turn it
off a couple times and turn it back on
and it will run and drive perfect when
its running rough if you give it gas it
makes it worse. I don't know much
about cars so any help is appreciated.
thanks

The idle goes up and down even not hitting the gas. when you hit the gas it goes crazy. Could not find my other post

okay...you can and should retrieve diagnostic codes as recorded by the OBD-II system who's connector will be not three feet from the ignition on the bottom of the dash...might be a plug that says "diagnostic"~ for fifteen bucks you can buy a plug-in scanner~

these are just educated guesses here now...so no lawsuits with this info~ The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system introduces exhaust gas mostly nitrogen and unburned gasses into the manifold when the combustion temperature gets too HOT and also upon deceleration...supposed to be on DE-celleration...gets all clobberd with carbon and cannot switch fast enough...get's jammed and does not operate properly....disassemble the EGR valve...insure the solenoid connection that controls it is working properly and blast the valve free of carbon with some brake cleaner~

that'd slow you down to 45 max....on account you're givin' yourself a "dutch- oven"....in a sense~ cannot breathe....mostly exhaust gas....y'see...check the operation of the EGR valve....okay.....next probably item~

okay...the idle air control valve...gets full of varnish (from the gasoline) and should be replaced~ https://www.google.com/#q=93+Dodge+Dakota+idle+air+control+valve

shootin' from the hip...I got more....but in me humble opinion...change out the EGR and solenoid....Idle air control valve and I believe you'll be off to the races~ complain to management if this ain't doin' it for ya~~
