By the switch do you mean the brake pedal switch? If so, what about the brake light relay?

You would have to do some testing, a test light is handy for this. There should be some plugins for each tail light, lot of times the connectors just get corroded. Pull them apart and clean with some electrical cleaner. Check to see that power is there at the plugins. If so then continue up to the bulb sockets. Any ground wire you see make sure it is clean and tight.
