Check your fuses, your owner's manual will have locations, or the reverse side of the panel cover. If you don't have a manual you can check on Autozone's website they have most fuse layouts for common makes/models. If you don't want to lookup fuse panel layouts, just go and pick up a fuse kit and use the included tester and go through all the fuses, replacing the bad ones.
You wrote me: "I replaced all the fuses even though none were blown as I tapped them in radio came on and off" - if the radio began intermittently working when wiggling the fuse, and the fuse is good, you have a bad fuse holder. There are a few things you can try: 1) bend the tabs of the fuse holder so it makes solid contact, 2) access the back of the fuse panel and check condition of wiring, 3) utilize one of the unused fuse slots and reroute the wire from the bad one to the new location. If you don't have any open, unused slots, get one of those "add-a-circuit" kits and make a new fused circuit for the radio/mirrors.
The cigarette lighter on a 2005 ford escape only works if the car is started and engine is running. Then you hold the lighter in for a few seconds and it gets hot. Not sure of other year fords. Therefore, you should not plug your phone into the lighter receptacle... it will not charge if engine is off. Use the Aux port next to shifter which provides full time power on or off.
