when does the battery light come on 2003 escape

the battery light flickers on with key and flickers again when starting the rest of
the time it is off alter is charging 14.6 volts

Alternator is charging good so have the battery checked out. May be starting to get a shorted cell.

14.6 volts charging is right on spec. Check grounds and check connections at battery. They should be corrosion free and tight.
