We just purchased a used 1995 Dodge Neon and we are having problems with it. The problem is the car will drive for approximately 15 to 20 minutes and the engine begins to jump and miss. When this occurs, we stop the car and let it cool for 10 to 15 minutes and then it will go for about 8 miles (10 to 15 minutes) and will start missing and jumping again. We took it to advance auto and they used a computer diagnostic machine and told us the ignition coil was malfunctioning, so we replaced it but it is still doing the same thing (missing and jumping). My wife says she smells a gas/fuel smell when it starts. Also, thought I had water in the gas tank, so I used dry gas but that didn't help either. Do the 1995 Neon's have a particular problem that sounds like mine? Thank you for any help you can give.
We are also having problems with the dashboard instrument lights and panel are not working. They also work on and off.
Hi Ccastorobina ! In these situations it's good to have a checklist of sorts to help make sure you cover all the bases. Hopefully it's a simple and easily fixable problem. Here's a troubleshooting guide to help you run it down. Once you get the engine problem diagnosed you can tackle teh dash lights. Good luck! http://autorepair.about.com/cs/troubleshooting/a/bl303b.htm
I was having instrument gauge issues, all of the instrument gauges (temp, speedo and rpm) except the gas gauge would "die" and I would get a "no bus" message on the odometer. I was pulling my hair out trying to find the problem because it wouldn't give me any diagnostic codes! Finally after weeks of internet searching I came across a post that mentioned aftermarket stereos and the V/Y wire. I have an aftermarket stereo and I remembered I had one wire with no match....the V/Y wire! Plus my battery wasn't fully charged. I put my battery on the trickle charger, pulled out the stereo and capped the one V/Y wire. Don't know exactly what fixed it (wire, battery or computer reset because the battery was out for awhile) but since then I have not had the "no bus" message since. I should also say that when the instrument panel would "die" there were no changes in how the car ran or operated...the instrument panel would work and not work randomly.
I have a 2002 Dodge Neon SXT
