my 1988 4 cylinder pickup wont start without priming it, could it be the cold start switch causing the problem?

I recently put a new head gasket, timing chain and cover, new plugs and wiring. Now the truck doesn't start unless you prime it first. I replaced the sending unit and another switch however I unable to obtain one switch from the parts store. I've been told its possibly a broken wire, I need advise.
