What makes my 1987 Toyota pickup die within a few minutes idling time?

Asked by Linjcat May 03, 2014 at 06:10 PM about the 1987 Toyota Pickup 2 Dr Deluxe Standard Cab LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The pickup will start and idle but dies after a few minutes. With battery charger attached it
will run on idle but if you race the engine it will choke up and die, Have replaced everything
but the alternator that I can think of. It needs muffler and I wondered if that might have an
affect on the running?

Check the voltage output from the alternator. If it not putting out around 14.5 volts this could be your problem.
