1997 neon wont start can u help?

this guy changed the timing belt and one piston. i have spark and gas but no air tube to
the intake. car doesnt try to start. but if i cross the firing order it backfires thru the air side
intake. whats that about? thanks

http://autorepair.about.com/library/firing_orders/bl-fo-5209.htm -- double check the spark plug wire order. This link is for the dohc but sohc is the same. If wires are correct it sounds like he might not have the timing properly lined up.

If it's an interference engine then yes it may have some bent valves. A compression check will tell you for sure if they are damaged.

a leakdown test would better diagnose the issue than a compression test. that way you will know which valves are leaking (if any) just be sure to remove the rockers first so all the valves seat properly into the head
