I was advised to avoid the use of a locking fuel cap on a 1913 Honda Fit because it could cause the check engine light to appear.Is tis correct?

It is ... some caps can't hold pressure because of the hole for the key

They were Pre-War models whose chassis completely rusted away in a year (shittozi 2 cycle engines) The Japanese decided that it was cheaper to go to war then pay warranty costs

if you buy something that will fit your fuel filler it should not be a problem
