98 dodge dakota steering column not shifting

The shifting gear on the steering column wont engage in
gear the engine just revs when put in drive and it wont
reverse ...the transmission is rebuilt with only 30 miles on it
i should add ...please help!

We're not certain of the mechanic that rebuilt the tranny as we just bought the truck ...if it is the linkage is that a fairly easy to get to? And thanks!
