Car Stalls , no check light

Asked by 1CrazyMomma Jun 14, 2016 at 05:16 PM about the 1999 Dodge Intrepid ES FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 1999 Intrepid  3.2L started  to idle a little rough,
and have the occasional  "hiccup" while stopped at
an intersection.  I changed the spark plugs, then
the performance got worse ... it just didnt seem to
have the same power.   I thought maybe my fuel
injectors were dirty  so I added a fuel injector
cleaner.  2 days later while driving, my engine
stalled.  All eletrical things like the radio and lights
still worked, nothing to indicate a bad alternator.  It
started right up again, but only made it another
block before it died again, this time it took about
10 to 15 minutes before it started again.   When I
tried to restart it, I got nothing, not even a click. I
was an hr from home, so I opted to have it towed
home For safety  reasons.
I spoke to  a couple  of car guys, and they agreed,
sounded like it could be my fuel pressure regulator,
pump or filter.  That was all replaced a couple of
days ago.  Yesterday on my way home from work,
it stalled again, but started right back up.  After
much thought, i took another look at the spark
plugs, discovered AutoZone gave me the wrong
spark plugs.  Installed the correct ones last night.
It seemed to have better power like  before all this
started, more get up and go...then It stalled again
this morning. Didn't  want to start for a couple of
minutes,  but it tried to turn over.

Back ground.... about a year or two ago, I replaced
the Cam Sensor and Crank Sensor.  The water
pump and timing belt were replaced about a year
ago.  And if I'm not mistaken, the 02 Sensors were
already replaced as well About a year or more ago.

Trying to do research online myself. And possible
causes I have found are: EGR Valve, MAF Sensor,
CPS, Crank/Cam Sensors......

Any ideas what ills my car??

Have it read for codes, even if the check engine light is NOT on the computer will have stored information and codes. Discount auto stores will read codes for no fee. write them down.

I have a diagnostic tool, and no codes come up at all. I had an Altima a couple of years ago, I had a short somewhere in the wires that lead to the ECT..... that car often stalled out while my foot was on the accelerater, just as this one has started to do. That one got really bad in a short time and I finally had to just get rid of it. Hoping that isn't what is happening here. :-(

CKPs don't trigger codes a lot of the vehicles I check will NOT have a code but the CKP is failing, or failed. Next, MAF sensors (try cleaning it) cause a loss of power and fueling issues lean /rich just like the HEGO's do your scanner read Data streams take a look at the fuel trims ST and LT an EGR can cause rough running or a stall but It should not hard to restart.. Finally its old '99 enough to have a computer problem TRY, unplug a sensor see if the computer catches it and logs a code IF NOT this is a clue, and time to inspect the PCB look and see if its burnt or delaminated in any areas. Regards Oh, you checked the TPS with a meter right?

Thank you for all the good advise ...... I unplugged the Crank Shaft sensor, and it wouldn't start, but it did create a code without triggering the check engine light. ..after plugging it in and clearing the code, I took it for a short drive, it didn't stall, but it did jerk , it did that once before. I also noticed that after turning it off, even after being on for just few minutes, I can smell gas. I'm wondering at this point if its the 02 oxygen sensor...and hoping it isn't the MAF... but shouldn't either of those trigger a code? Ugh, so frustrating.

Might have a broken vacuum hose. Check PCV hose and breather hose for cracks or breaks. Always seems to happen at the elbow. This is more for folks who are running into this same issue. Things to check: PCV hose Emission hose (breather hose) CKP and Camshaft Sensors MAP or MAF Sensor Vacuum leaks (Have mechanic run a smoke test) Ignition Coil
