1999 dodge dakota 3.9

Asked by Danny_P May 08, 2017 at 12:22 AM about the 1999 Dodge Dakota SLT LB RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 99 dodge dakota with a 3.9 ran out of gas, I
refilled the tank, won't start. It turns over but won't
fire. I checked the spark, I'm getting spark. I
checked the fuel rail and I'm getting gas, I poured
fuel into the throttle body and still won't fire so I'm
now baffled.

If you put fuel down the throttle body and it still didn't fire off then you not getting spark to the plugs or somethings more serious with the basic engine has happened, i.e. Cam timing, engine compression, etc

I pulled out the spark plug and set it next to the block and had someone turn over the engine so I visibly seen the spark plug sparking. I hope it's not timing.

Ok, was it dull yellow or a bright blue spark, if dull yellow you have loss of energy, could be ignition coil, cap rotor or wires, I would also run a compression test just to rule out any cam timing problems.

Might try getting the computer flash out codes also.

I had this happen the injectors get clogged and or wear out from trying to suck something that isnt there. Mine was gonna need all new fuel system feom pump to injectors and line. Ot also had 309000 miles. i bought a new one same truck cause the dakota 3.9 magnum engine will outlast the body if taken care of only problem is none of the air cond. seems to work.

I even sprayed ether into air filter it just wouldnt turn over. I got 400 for scrapping it bought a red one with 138000 for $1300. Thats your best bet cause itll cost 500 to fix it.
