Buying a GTO but noticed all the clones out there

Asked by GuruH429K Mar 25, 2020 at 04:00 PM about the 1966 Pontiac GTO Coupe

Question type: General

I have been looking for a 64-66 GTO and have been very hesitant before
buying because of all the clones out there. What advice can someone give me
to verify I am not buying a clone? I know there is a stamped number on each

Best thing to do is look at the VIN and then google it. There are plenty of VIN decoders online and you can find one that specializes in Pontiacs and even in GTOs. Beyond this, there are people who find junked GTOs and they'll remove the VIN plate then transfer it to a LeMans, which is virtually identical to the GTO. When you look at the VIN plate see if shows signs that it's not original.

Look for subtle differences between a documented GTO and one you are considering purchasing. Location of badges, minor trim pieces like the grab bar for the passenger's seat (only on GTO), owner history documents, clean title, tail lights, and the like. Make it a point to attend local car shows and take pictures of displayed cars (to assess for consistency with what you think is a true GTO). It may take time but in the end it is worth it for the money real GTO's bring. Also join a users forum. They are a good source of info. Good luck.

Don't buy one without PHS documentation. The 1964 GTO's are very difficult to verify no matter how much information you have.
