how does my gmc sierra charge rv battery

My truck is not charging my trailer batteries.  2013 2500 HD with tow
package.  Does it charge thru the alternator or the converter in the rv?

That would depend on how the trailer is set up. It is possible to charge the trailer batteries while driving and I would expect that to be the case but you will have to check and see if the hot wire to the trailer works or not.
