Sluggish pickup in 2000 Dodge Neon

Asked by AudenHoggart Feb 03, 2013 at 12:38 PM about the 2000 Dodge Neon ES Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2000 Dodge Neon, with 105,000 miles is running fine and recently passed its state inspection.  My only issue is that it has sluggish acceleration from either a complete stop or a slowdown to a low mph.  Once up to highway speeds or for running around town it's fine.

My mechanic didn't have any particular ideas.  It's actually been this way for a cuople of years, so whatever it is it's not a new sudden problem..

Guess my FIRST question is: Why didn't you get this looked at 2 years ago, when you first noticed this problem?? Oh well...105k miles later and ole girl is still running, so it can't be something too bad. I'm thinking fuel injectors maybe...BUT the mechanic would HAVE to have picked up on something as obvious as THAT!

I would suspect a worn fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, clogged air filter or a clogged catalytic converter. It's good enough to maintain a highway speed but limits acceleration.

My neon is doing the same. Have you found out what the problem is yet?
