my car runs hot off and on not all the time and when it gets hot it shuts off but the gage doesnt go up slowly it rises uo very quickly and suggestions

Check coolant level when cool. Then replace thermostat. Anything further is more costly and harder to check. Ensure radiator isnt stopped up. Also if a gasket is bad that coolant passes thru it can introduce air bubbles in the system and cause problems. A pressure test can help figure that out

I'd definitely check the coolant level when cold as well as the thermostat and also the fan relay if none of those are to blame it could be the radiator needs to be flushed or replaced or the water pump needs to be replaced
