I drained oil from some type of box between the front wheels, and I wanted to know what this part was and the effects of draining it.

if it was red it was your transmission and you need to replace it or the car simply just wont move, and the way you describe it its either transmission fluid or oil.

you drained a fluid and you have no idea what it is? im guessing transmission fluid. and if you dont replace it you will ruin your tranny.

As I tried to read up on it, I think I drained the differential that is located between the front wheels. If this is not correct, then please let me know. Thank you

in a FWD car the differential and the transmission are one unit, and subsequently are lubricated by the same fluid.

It's the differential and uses 80w90 gear oil...if automatic transmission drain plug you removed was on passenger side...there should be a little aluminum tag indicating this just above the plug you removed.
