Why did My 2000 4.7l drop from 17mpg to 9 mpg when installing in a 2001 Durango

Asked by Countryboybeck03 Apr 10, 2012 at 06:11 AM about the 2001 Dodge Durango SLT 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Ok if this helps I totaled my 2000 Durango so I bought an 01 with blown motor to swap mine outta my 00 with. After
installed I noticed my 17 mpg motor only getting 9 with n check engine light. Other things I noticed but may b
irrelevant is I had to use the 01 oxygen sensors cause the plugs where different and had to use the 01 computer
cause my 00 one wouldn't operate the gauges in the 01 truck. The computers look completely different but is the
ignition and fuel programming still the same. Does running 01 computer on a 2000 motor cause fuel mixture to be
incorrect. Does the 02 sensors read different as I heard the 01 intake is 68mm as opposed to the 65 on the 2000.
It's definitely running rich as u almost pass out if stopped for any length of time with the window down. Have not
checked fuel pressure, or ran ohms on o2s or operation of the PCv

You must when doing an engine swap year to year chck the wiring harness and computer for differences. Had a muffler shop do one near me and brought it in would not stay running, 01-02 was different wiring harness pinouts. Unless you have the wiring harness and the pcm to the new engine out of the wrecked car you may be chasing wires to correct the problem for a while.
