How to fix the DVD player when it reads "bad disc" upon loading a new DVD.

The van is new to me. Upon trying to play a DVD, the machine will allow the disc to load,
it makes noises like it is trying to read the disc and the screen says "reading", but every
time the machine then says "bad disc". The disc could be brand new and that code still
pops up on the screen.
