2001 dakota np233 tranfer case making noise and jumping when engaged,help

When I put my truck in 4wheel it makes a growling noise and jumps badly if you turn the wheels. I have replaced the half shafts and it is no better, could this be the chain or do I need another transfer case?

if its fine straight ahead then its in the 3rd member or ring and pinion area, the spider gears work over when turning a radius

It makes noise and feels like it is binding when going straight.It will even come to a stop if you take your foot off of the gas.
