why does my 2002 stratus 3.0 rpm drop unless i have the ac compressor on?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 02 Stratus Coupe 3.0 will not maintain enough RPM to put in gear unless my AC Compressor is on.  This seems backwards to me.  It cuts off at stop lights unless I keep the AC wide open.  I replaced  my compressor last year and most recently had my exhaust welded and replaced the battery...same day.  That's when the problems started,   Also found the main air intake hose disconnected from breather but have put that back on.  Any ideas??

Sounds like your idle air control is probably working correctly cause it come on when ac is turned on. That's why it idles better with ac on. I would try cleaning the throttle plate. Pay special attention to its edges and the sides of the throttle body where the two come together when throttle plate is closed. This should bring your idle back to normal.
