Value of Car with new engine

Question type: Car Selling & Trading In

Hi -

I've got a 2013 Volvo XC90 that's at the end of a lease and I think I'm going to
buy it instead of paying out about $4K in mileage penalties. I know, buying a
car at the end of a lease is usually a bad choice - My question: Volvo replaced
the original engine with a brand new one just two years ago due to a factory
issue with the original engine - meaning that the current engine has only 25K
miles on it where the car has 70K miles on it. Is it safe to assume that this car
would have greater resale with the newer engine than a similar vehicle with
70K miles - if so, but approximately how much?

IMO, it really won't increase the value of the vehicle. Think of it this way , the vehicle came with an engine from the factory and it will need one when you sell it. Also some buyers might be turned off that it was replaced, some might think that is better. But only if you tell someone it was replaced. Also buying a vehicle off lease isn't usually a bad choice. You know what your buying and the residual cost to buy it is probably less than what you will find on a dealer lot for a comparable vehicle and mileage.

Just curious was the engine replaced based on the oil consumption, piston ring issues?

Tom - Thanks. Oil consumption was high and we brought in for several services in quick succession. Volvo actually had it for 2 months and determined that there was an internal fault in the engine and then put in a new factory engine. So the increased value in a 2013 XC90 with an engine with 30K miles on a car with 70K miles is negligible in your opinion? Thanks - Jeff

It's never worth paying low mileage pricing for a high mileage vehicle! Don't kid yourself. You'll pay for the miles you used. either now or later. I'd end it now! start over with new miles, new warranty. No high mileage problems!

You owe 4K in mileage penalties? Wow, what were you thinking when you leased the car?

Yeah - what was supposed to be a home office turned into 3 hrs of driving daily for 2 yrs.
