Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My daughters car would not start. It was making a clicking
sound. My son checked the battery and it had voltage. )3
replaced the starter and then went in to start it and now it
makes no noise no lights absolutely nothing. Can you help
a mom who needs to get her daughters car fixed.

Make absolutely sure that all of the cells in the battery are good. Remove battery terminals, clean and then tight them well to the battery posts. Also, make sure that the new starter was installed correctly, just in case. There can be other electrical causes for this problem, but start by doing this, if you haven't already.

All of that seems fine. Someone said to unplug the battery for a while and then plug it in again?

You will do that to manually erase any codes in the computer, but you did not say that the check/service engine light is on. However, you can do it , remove the terminals from the battery and wait about 15 minutes, then replace them again. You will probably have to reset the clock and radio settings in the car as they are usually lost with this procedure.

Frankly, each time I have done this procedure I only wait about 15 minutes. If you check online "how to reset computer" you will see that the recommendation varies, remove positive terminal, remove negative terminal, remove both terminals, wait 5, 10, 15 minutes. By the way, when your son worked in the car, did any sparks came out from any part of the vehicle? I am thinking, and this happens, of a short causing blown relays or fuses.

I talked with a friend who owns a local mechanic shop and he says that the description of the original problem with clicking sound would have made him to check for bad starter relay before replacing the starter itself. Not having the car to test, in his opinion, an electrical problem existed and is now worst or it was created when the job was done. Do check the starter relay in the relay box located in the engine compartment!
