2012 subaru outback immobilizer and remote starter

My remote starter stopped working after 90 k
service. I realized that after a week - it might be
coincidental, it is just so odd especially when I had
no problems. Anyhow I went  there today and after
checking everything they told me I would need to
replace immobilizer - they couldn't explain how this
could happen etc. Thy told me it will be about $350
to replace. My question is: does this happen
normally? Can immobilizer just stop working
properly and not respond to remote starter?
