I was charged $742 in doc fees for a 2012 F150. Is that a outlandish amount, or
normal. What does a doc fee pay for?
Sadly, that is an 'extra' charge that dealers add to increase profits. The Doc Fee is to cover the cost of filing the paperwork with Dept of Motor Vehicles to get the car properly registered and titled in your name.
And to get your license plates. $742 is a pretty high Doc fee. In the past, I have avoided dealers with high Doc Fees.
$742 just for Doc Fees and nothing else sounds like a rip-off. A more reasonable Doc Fee - if it is charged - would be in the $150 to $175 range. Do a search for dealer Doc Fees in your state and see if there is a limit for what can be charged.
