Asked by J_Bill96 Sep 06, 2015 at 07:16 PM about the 2003 Dodge Neon SE Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The water from the radiator cycles
threw, the cooling fans work. The
coolant in the reserver sounds like
water boiling and it spills out of the
reserver and a little bit of smoke
comes out every time it over heats,
and it only does when I drive it from
about 20-30 minutes. I was told it
could be the head gasket but I want
to make sure it is, because I'm tired
of my car overheating!!! And also
there is sometimes a knocking sound
when I turn it on in the morning,
please help me by answering all my
questions!!!

Have you tried flushing the cooling system maybe be blockage in the engine cooling system. If not flush with Prestone Super flush and the knocking noise is most likely from the engine over heating so much the oil has lost its viscosity and is to thin to lubricant the bearings properly. Not saying it is going to take care of your problem but it is worth a try.

I have an '05 SXT with 2.0 and had to replace the head due to a crack in the head where the valve stem rides.Factory defect and it was causing coolant to enter #2&3 cylinders.Ran hot after 20 to 30 minutes of normal driving.Final cost of $1500.Good luck finding a replacement head.
