Transmission shifting problems

Asked by Chasity Nov 15, 2015 at 03:46 PM about the 2003 Dodge Durango SLT 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Suddenly with no warning transmission was
slipping after replacing radiator. Took back
to shop replaced tranny filter and bands
adjusted. Slipping stopped but was not
shifting into OD. Each day it seemed more
more difficult to shift into higher gear. Was
running 30-35 at about 2000 RPM as it
would not shift. Suddenly it would through
me into neutral a new issue that developed
a few days later. If put into neutral and then
back to drive it would engage gear again.
Last night I drove I heard a strange noise
and couldn't engage any gear but reverse.
Pulled over shut off and sat. When help
arrived put into gear and started do living
again. Drove as far as I could approx 2
miles down road and lost all gears but
reverse this time no weird sound. Shut off
again, this time still no gear but reverse.
Similar prob occurred few years ago but
never lost all gears only had first, that was
governor sensor and solenoid. Does this
sound like this again, or did the tranny junk
out? Has me puzzled as to the sudden of
this and only after radiator was replaced.

What was the problem? Transmission? Tramission case? 4 wheel drive issue?

The 46RE shifts may shift normally while cold & cool, (not always) as it starts to warm up the 1->2 and 2->3 shifts become delayed, they don’t happen at the expected RPM they happen at higher RPMs. May also be the governor pressure sensor that can give an incorrect pressure back to the computer in closed loop. We replaced the “solenoid pack” and spring kit, and it fixed the problem.

IS THIS OUR PROBLEM SOLVED? I got a 2002 dodge Durango. ..have similar problems --transmission seems to bog down and won't go into gear, too speed about 20 but reverse seems fine...replaced trans filter and Lucas trans no slip but with no results...but after wanting to pull my hair out on a 1.5 mile trip I pulled over, opened the hood and jiggled the transmission relay fuse and it started shifting...next day no shift again so I jiggled the fuse again and boom it shifts...now I gotta figure out a permanent solution for a problem I believe to be a lack of good contact at the fuse box
