Hello. I have a 2012 Chevy Impala LT, 3.6L V6. It has roughly 35,000 miles on it. Occasionally when I hit the brakes I get a Stabilitrak Error Message "Service Stabiltrak". When it happens the odometer needle fluctuates and the power locks engage/disengage. Some days it won't happen at all. Other days it'll happen almost every time I hit the brakes. Someone mentioned ot have the front wheel sensors (speed and abs sensor) looked at. Would appreciate any suggestions for where to start. Thanks.

Since it's a relatively new car and it should have some sort of warranty, take it back to the dealer. It may be a known problem and they can fix it. When the speedometer needle dancing and locks cycling, it sounds like a lack of 12 volt power to them when the brake light bulbs are energized.

Hey thanks guys. I just got back in town yesterday since I posted the question and noticed the service brake assist message as well. So when I hit the brakes I get "service brake assist" then "service stabiltrak" while the speedometer needle fluctuates and the door locks cycle and i believe the radio turns off for a second then back on. I'll definitely take it in and have them look into the BCM. Thanks again. Also, I don't know why I said 2012, it's 2011.

I have the same exact problem with mine, except the air conditioning goes out as well! What ended up being the problem with yours! I'm thinking about replacing the BCM.

I had the car on the computer & the following codes came up; U100, U0140, U0101, P0575, P069E, P0700, & U7300. They are uncertain about what it is and feel that it is either the BCM or the sensor in the tire/bearing. But the sensor shouldn't knock out the A/C, the bouncing speedometer, or the radio. With mine, it seems like it only happens when it's been sitting in the hot sun. Chevy dealerships state that they're not aware of this being a problem, and replacing the BCM is their best guess. They said it "might" just be a loose ground wire...another mechanic said it could be the ignition switch....oy vey!!! I don't really want to waste a lot of money on what it "could or might" be....

I also have a 2012 Chevrolet Impala LTZ.. i purchased my car last november fron a used car dealer and it had $30,000 miles on it. I only had it for 3 months and it started making noises in the front left... sounded like a scraping/grinding noise and it only did it a couple times and went away. After about 2 months of intermittent noises the ABS light came on, the service stabilitrak warning, service traction control warning, and service brake assist warning. I took it to three different mechanics (2 of which are certified GM mechanics) and nobody had an answer. I finally found a trusted mechanic who dissected the problem and they told me i needed to replace the left front hub assembly becuz it was worn and cracked. My car does not have the bumper to bumper warranty any more becuz i have about 50,000 miles on it. This repair cost me $400! NOW i am being told that there is a defect in the ABS SENSOR MODULE which is not covered under manufacturer 100,000 mile warranty! This repair is approximately $450! WTF??! I am wondering if this is something I can wait to repair now that i am broke from the first repair??? i am not a happy owner of this car seems like there has been nothing but grief an i read alot about these chevy impala's having issues.

Hey guys... I'm the original poster. After taking the car to the GM dealer, the problem ended up being two wires were meshed together at the wire harness. They were the cause of all of the sensor issues. It was a $160 dollar repair. All has been great since. no issues at all.

Yes...for some reason the Engineers decided to go delicate...instead of HEARTY they could have used a 12V signal...but N000000, they had to use a "field effect" like from a transistor....light and flakey with a tendancy to get mixed in with the spaghetti~...just because the signals are minimal does not mean that the wires have to be minimal...especially in a clobber- abrasive environment with a lot of flexing and dust~...some people's kids, I tell ya~

2012 Impala LT owner here...few months ago while backing out of driveway and leaving...slight grinding noise in front and stabilitrak light flickers. progressively got worse...called dealership and told I was "taking off" to fast! Yeah, right. Took car to dealer (only 24000m) and replaced right front worn hub bearing. All is well for about 2-3 weeks then the grinding started again....back to dealership...this time the right hub bearing.! You would think it would have been checked the first time. first day with both bearings replaced, ok. Then a small shimmy in front end...I'm thinking its the road I am on "NOT" has been 2 weeks and leaving for working this am... drove about 1mile and turned around. the pulsing and vibration in front end scared the bejeepers out of me...waiting for dealership to open to have towed. Only upside at this point is the warranty/ext warranty I have!

2012 Impala LT. 57000miles. Wheel hub/bearings bad both sides. REALLY????!!!! Just dropped $650 on tires and alignment (that couldn't possibly be accurate with bad hubs), now dealership wants another $700+ to replace bearings and "realign" wheels. the only other car I've ever had with bearing issues had 200,000+ miles on it. Bumper to bumper warranty was gone at 36k, and the "power train" warranty to 100k doesn't cover this. RIDICULOUS, cuz I'm quite sure the "power" has to pass thru the bearings to get from the engine to the road!!!! (front wheels)

So I'm reading all your post, I bought my 2012 Impala used exactly 1 yr ago. I've been very happy with my purchase until about 2weeks ago. I keep getting the same info on the dash, it says Service Traction Control, Stabilitrak & Reducing engine Power. I took it to the dealership & they wanted $140.00 just to look at it. my warranty is up & this is not covered under my powertrain warranty. I have 90,000 miles. What should I be more cautious for Left/Right Hub or some wires?

We have a 2010 impala that has been throwing the service stabilitrak, service traction control and engine power reduced warnings. Dealership replaced thr gas pedal. The throttle body was replaced and both front wheel speed sensors/hubs where replaced just today and the problem is still there. It actually is worse now. It all comes on as soon as you start the car

@jdrizzle Have they checked the wires at the wire harness? A few wires were meshed together on my Impala. Once they replaced the wires everything cleared up. Haven't had any issues since.

So I have a 2013 Impala and the same thing started happening to me. Of course Chevy said my warranty is up and wanted 112.00 to tell me what was wrong. I took it to oreillys, he told me the abs sensor is bad. The guys at my parts store said it would be best to change the hub seeing as the sensor is located inside of it. Long story short I changed the hub on drivers side and paid $71.51for the part. So far she is driving like she use to!!

I have a 2012 Impala and started to hear the grinding noise coming from my front left. Thinking my break pads were worn, I replaced them and the rotors. Breaks looked good, but was happy to replace breaks. The noise continued whenever I came to a stop and then had to drive forward. A few days later, the Traction Control light came on. I turned the traction control off for the past two days, and I haven't heard the grinding noise any longer. I will definitely try replacing the hub and ABS....Thanks for sharing.

2013 Chevy Impala, 75000 miles with the left front noise when turning left after backing. Chevy dealer replaced sensors, hubs( twice on left, once on right even though the noise was left front. Independent dealer charged 700 to change and look at problem. Still has problem, he says to drive it 100 and he will check the ABS. I think I just got kissed off.

2012 chevy impala, my sons car, he turned a corner and his car stalled and powered down, then the stabilitak traction control came on and car starting running like crap, now knocking really bad. need some help, Took it in to a local shop and they ran diagnostic and told us he had internal engine problem, then told us it could be a worn valve or valve spring but have to take top part of engine apart, labor alone going to cost 2000-2500. we don't have that kind of money. of course no warranty on the car. So I called GMC service and checked to see if a recall, of course not.but they did say then needed to diagnostic on it the see if they could help. me at 125. per hour. has anyone found the problem yet?

@Iroberson83 I have a 2013 Chevy Impala. At 36,000+ I started hearing a grinding noise on the front of my vehicle. I took it to Chevy multiple times and they were not able to diagnose the problem. Then I took it to another Chevy dealership and found out it was a wheel barring and hub issue. After a few months i started hearing the noise again and because it was intermittent, it went undiagnosed (again). A year later and at 90,000 the noise was very bad that I took it to Chevy again. I was told it was due to my steering wheel fluid level was low, so I paid to get it flushed. Guess what the problem didn't go away. At 100,000+ miles the noise was no longer intermittent. If I turned the wheel left or right it would grind. Worst part was when I had to turn at an intersection and I accelerated even just a little, it would grind and prevent my car from moving. Very dangerous! So I'm out of warranty and Chevy diagnosed my car and said I had to get a Hub and Harness replaced. Thanks to the service advisor and discount coupons I only paid $1,500 vs the $1,900 it would have cost. But that's still $1,500!!! I was informed that this is an issue particularly with this Chevy model. And as I read through all of your messages I can see that it's a real problem. I wrote a msg to GM. If we all complain to GM they should do a recall.

I have had the same problem with my 2012 Chevy Impala LT for almost a year now. The service stabilitrak warning, service traction control warning, and service brake assist warnings all come on once I step on the brake, if not on already when I start the car. It also makes a grinding noise when I step the brake and the messages appear. I have had this fixed at the dealership with them saying it needed a new ABS sensor. I got it replaced and a month later what do you know the same problem yet again! The car currently has 140,000 miles on it so it has been used hard, but its still going!

I have a 2012 Impala LTZ with the same described problems as above. They came on recently with about 65k miles. I ordered new hub/wheel assemblies that include the sensor for both right and left front. I feel it will be cheaper to replace them myself and see if that fixes it versus letting some shop mess with it. The whole assembly with new bearings and all was only $90 each and I bought the better ones. I will return to this site and let you know if it works. May 24, 2016. somerj

Dear Impala Owners, I suggest you all contact GM Chevrolet. This is the person who is "supposedly investigating". They have told me that no other impala has been reported to have the sane issues. They are trying to work out a deal, offering additional warranty on my vehicle- Bull. They are just trying to satisfy me so they won't have to do a recall. I have a 2012 Impala with about 118,000 miles I bought used 2 yrs ago. It started a few weeks ago doing the same thing all of you are posting. Will it hurt to drive it like this? I can't afford to put $400t into fixing it right now. This is the only transportation I have.

9 people found this helpful.
95

@susie2267 it should not hurt the way you drive your car whatsoever. I've had this problem for a few years and it has not affected me. A few times if I step on the gas or brake it would grind a little but otherwise it has been fine. The only thing you would need to worry about is the vehicle passing inspection. My mechanic has been passing it. I'd rather not throw $400 either which is why I haven't gotten it fixed lately. I had the sensor replaced before but a month later the same thing again. I will not pay to get it fixed again. Hope I helped!

5 people found this helpful.

@susie2267 & Frank_Hud, This issue is dangerous if you don't take care of it after 10,000 miles. At first the issue would only be a noise, then after 10,000 miles, when accelerating and turning in an intersection, it would prevent the car from going, so I would have to let the vehicle roll on its own (by not stepping on the paddle) while turning to prevent my vehicle from stopping. I took my vehicle right away and had the technician go for a drive with me so that they would experience the same issue. After the third time I had this repaired I called Chevrolet Customer and started a complaint. I didn't take their deal and I was told that they would have a vendor do the investigation. From what I was told, Chevrolet Dealerships will be informed and when these types of vehicles with these types of problem are reported and the report shows an increase, they will do a recall and refund my $1,600 I paid for my repair. So everyone, I highly recommend you contact you local Chevrolet Dealerships and inform them of your issue.

2012 Chevy Impala grinding in front left wheel area with anti skid light. Occurs when straightening steering wheel from left or right to straight. Happens more in damp weather. Took to dealer today, replace two speed control harness due to corrison and chaffing. This has gradually getting worse, started about 10-12 months ago.

Everyone having this issue should call! I started noticing this same problem within the 1st year (2014) of owning my 2013 Impala. I took it to 2 different dealers 3 times while it was still under warranty. They couldn't find anything wrong, yet it's still doing this and it's become more often! I just called the Chevy Customer service number that Janna_88 suggested to report the problem. Still no recall but looking at all these complaints about the same exact thing there has to be one coming up! Maybe not enough people have reported the problem! If everyone would just call maybe we will see some results. It was easy! I got right through and the rep was very nice. And now they have all my info in case there is a recall down the road. MrRobinson, your post seems to be helpful and it appears like the mashed wires in the harness would cause sensor problems. However, many others are having problems and no one else has come up with the mashed wire issue. Do you know how they diagnosed the problem to be mashed wires? It would be very helpful to a lot of impala owners to know this, I would think. MrRobinson wrote Hey guys... I'm the original poster. After taking the car to the GM dealer, the problem ended up being two wires were meshed together at the wire harness. They were the cause of all of the sensor issues. It was a $160 dollar repair. I bought a 2006 Impala after renting one on vacation. Over the lifetime of this vehicle(153,00 miles) I had to replace 5 hub assemblies on either side. This had to be a defect they were aware of but did not want to admit and after what I am reading here this had to be a known problem they did not want to take responsibility for. I bought a 2012 LTZ certified used one from a Chevy dealership with low mileage. I had to replace the left hub assembly and wiring harness when it reached 20,000 miles last December. Luckily it was covered by the warranty. I will think twice before I buy another GM car.

Same problem with service stabilitrak service brake assist and service traction control. I also am hearing the grinding and hesitation when turning left and right. Called the GM number you all have posted. They made me a case folder but really didn't help me much. This evening when driving home my car shut down in the middle of the road while my son and I were driving home. This problem is extremely dAngerous and the response that GM is providing is ridiculous. Please everyone call because our lives are literally at stake

I'm having the same problem with my wife's 2012 LT, it has 99 K. If you take off from a stop like normal the car hesitates, actually feels likes the breaks are being applied, the same if you put it in reverse but If you take off really slow it doesn't do it. The service stabilitrak service brake assist and service traction control warnings all flash. If I shut the traction control off it doesn't do it. I had it to the shop yesterday and they hooked it up and it was coding to the left front wheel bearing. My mechanic did some checking and said the wheel bearings all feel fine. So he cleared the code and said if it happens again bring it back and he'll further investigate. They didn't charge me a penny either!! So all was fine driving home but later in the day the problem returned. I'm leaning toward an electrical problem as it is fine with the traction control off. I'm taking it back to him today and will update later with what we find. I will also be contacting GM about this issue, but once I get this fixed I'm selling this car and will be my last GM vehicle purchased.

Hi Everyone. All our issues are all very similar. I suggest you all go to your local Chevrolet Dealer and get your vehicle checked for the hub bearing. Then contact: Jhan Chevrolet Customer Assistance Phone Number: 1-866-790-5700 Extension Number: 5920335. He told me that once there's been an increase of this complain they will do a recall. I have asked for a refund of all my expenses. I suggest you all do the same. Keep you receipt for all your expense. Lastly, once you do, please let us all know so that we all have a thread of mwssages that we can reference to. Best, Jannah

It was not a good feeling so please everyone call and report this.

I had exactly same problem here! 2012 Impala LTZ, 38k miles. The check engine light on with "service traction control" and "service stabilitrak" message shows up. At he mean time, feel like engine power reduced and tons of white gas emitted. But sometimes these don't happen and everything looks okay. Local dealer told me it's problem about fuel injector because the code told them "cylinder 5 misfire". And dealer wants to charge me 1500 bucks to replace injector. Radiculus!

2012 Impala LTZ with 72,000 miles, same exact issue, front left grinding noise. I first noticed it about a year ago. I took it to get checked and they found nothing. Recently it has become more frequent, so I took it in again. I just spent $775 on 2 Hub Assemblies today. They also found another issue with the Rack & Pinion (a leak), They recommended taking it to the dealership to see if it is under warranty. Otherwise the cost to fix will be around $1,700!!! I still have 5,000 miles on my extended GM warranty. Wish me luck, I plan to use all your statements as a back up. Thanks for all the information. This was very helpful to know that am not alone.

First thing is get the codes. In my case I knew the right front wheel was the problem.I did scan for codes and got C0040 .right front brake sensor malfuction. So with some simple tests which were pulling the connector apart at wheel sensor and probing the sensor side with multimeter set on ohms scale reading was 1050 specs are 1000 to 1500 for these sensors. It was within spec so switch meter to AC scale and spun the tire reached 1 on scale this proves sensor is fine with these to tests.Pulling on top and button of tire aggressively to test bearing showed no movement tight bearing was fine. So now on to test the harness also with multimeter. Do this at the connector end of wheel sensor using DC scale, use a paperclip in right side of connector that is when connector clamp up top , put red multimeter lead in paperclip and black lead to battery or other ground , turn key just on not run you should have a reading of 5 volts .less bad harness. Also wiggle and move harness around as far as you can while watching meter. If it drops off 5 volts get repair harness and splice it in... Mine dropped right where harness joined the main harness..This was what caused all codes...These cars should be checked out right before parts are thrown on.. Those with recurring problems get someone to test their YAW sensor tested . Hopes this helps otherx

PULLING INTO a busy intersection and having the antilock brakes slow your car has been a major concern of mine. its in the shop now getting looked over.

Thank you for the direction. I have a 2012 Chevy Impala and bought it a couple months ago with 70k miles. I was starting to get a wobble in the front driver's side tire. The tires were older so I replaced them with an alignment but was still getting a wobble and intermittent "Service stabletrak" with the system resetting itself. This is my third used Impala in 4 years, I use them as work cars and rack up the mileage. I read this thread and determined it was the driver's side wheel hub today. It cost $90 at a local part store ($40 on www.rockauto.com) and took an hour and a half to change out. I have put on 60 miles on the car today and all problems are gone. Thanks, everyone. I was not getting the typical indicators of a bad bearing such as a wiggle when pulling on the tire or the grinding.

35

I would like to add I called NTB about replacing the wheel hub and they gave me a price of almost $300. That is where I got the tires from. Cheer and thanks again.

Hello everyone I have a 2104 Impala LTZ Limited with 42,400 miles. A few days ago I started having the same issue with grinding and vehicle slowing down when you turned. Took it to one dealer on 4/25/17 who could not find anything wrong. Yesterday (4/27/17) "Service Stabilitrak" message come on. I immediately took it back to the dealer and they plugged their meter in and nothing showed. The dealer said they could run diagnostics to see what the issue was and that the vehicle was OK to drive home. A few blocks from my house I was making a left hand turn, my car almost stopped completely and would not accelerate. Luckily it finally took off just before I was T-BONED. I will be taking my car to another dealer and have them run diagnostics. I have printed all of your comments to present to the dealer. I will see what they find and I will be contacting GM Thanks for all the information

I have a 2012 Impala with the same issues, (service stabilitrak, traction control and brake assist). I am having problems with the steering and brakes if I have to brake hard. I called GM at 866- 790-5700 xt 5920335 to register my complaint. I also contacted and filed with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), at www.nhtsa.gov. I was told by the GM customer service person EVERYONE HAS TO CALL AND SAY WHAT'S HAPPENING before they will do anything.

I called the number in the last post. They assigned me a case number and put me in contact with my local chevy dealer's service garage. I told him I replaced the r/f hub assembly and the issue with the service stabiltrak alert went away but it is now back. He advised most of the issues are related to the four hub assembly sensors, very common problem. To fix them you need to replace the hub assembly. so I will be replacing each one as I can.

Same abs stabilitrac problem as everyone else. Took my 2012 in a couple of years ago and they replaced a wheel bearing. Seems to be their common diagnosis without fixing the real problem I NOW HATE GM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FIX THE GD PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!!! It's been a couple years and the problem won't go away. It's become a safety issue when I've tried to enter a roadway and the car won't move with cars coming at me!! Don't know what the relationship is but recently the muffler went bad. As I drove with a bad muffler the problem went away. When the muffler was fixed the problem returned. Figured it was the proximity of the muffler hole to whatever harness or sensor is the problem.

I have a 2013 Impala and it has been doing the same as everyone else has stated grinding in left front wheel it doesn't happen all the time but recently it has done it more often. Today I was driving and my dash light cane on service stabilitrak, traction control and brake assist. I'm going to call the number tomorrow but what do I tell the mechanic that I take it too?

Whenever those same 3 lights came on in my impala the cure seemed to be to first check the wiring harness in the hub assembly(possibly a short circuit) or the hub assembly itself is bad. Please let me know how you made out. Thanks.

I have a 2012 LTZ with same problem as all has posted. Was going today to purchase a new 2017 Impala, all these post have changed my mind, going to look at other brands (and their warranties!). GM has lost a longtime customer do to their resistance to fix a known problem.

Had the same issue. Changed the complete gas pedal with sensor and haven't had issues since. The sensor went bad. $80 part and a few minutes of labor fixed the issue. It's literally a few bolts and a plug. Don't give a mechanic hundreds of dollars.

2012 Chevy Impala with 81k miles. I bought the car used a few months ago. Started getting the service stabiltrak and antilock brake display. I changed the l/f wheel hub and this stopped the errors for a few day but it returned. I started noticing a small bounce or wobble in the rear. The rear wheel hubs felt tight but this being my third Impala in 4 years I replaced both rear wheel hubs (each Impala had a wheel hub/bearing issues). I have not had an error message in three days and it tightened up the rear. This is not a recall issue but a part issue. Wheel hubs cost $43 each on Rockauto.com or $93 at Auto Zone. Each one needs about 1.5 hours of labor to change out.

I have a 2012 Impala LTZ and the same thing started happening to me. 3 messages came on the dash a) Service Brake Assist b) Service Traction Control c) Service StabiliTrak. The ABS light came on and stayed for about 10mins before it went away. Currently, everything is fine. If I were to continue driving, does anyone know what would happen? Would the brake stop working? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. J

I'm having the same exact problem with my 2012 chevy impala. My front right wheel bearing has had to be replaced 2 times already within the past couple of months. And now the service stablitrack, service break assist service traction control, and ABS light has been going off again, but this time it doesn't stay on. It only comes on at random times when I actually need those things to work like when it's raining, if I have to slam on breaks, or if I turn my wheel hard. I also hear the horrible noise at times that I turn the wheel hard. Someone pulled out in front of me a week ago and I had to slam on breaks and as soon as I did the service break assist, service stabiltrack, service traction control, and ABS light came on. Very scary that in the times I need my car to work correctly it doesn't, I could have easily hit that vehicle and had a wreck due to this problem. I called the number and tried to report the problem but I didnt have the vin number because my car is in the shop. I will call later once I get it back and give it to them. Anyone have any more information about them recalling this problem?

i am a technician for over 8 years, this issue of abs, traction light coming on at left or right turns (mostly left turns) is coming from a bad harness to the hut assembly, the wire harness for both side hub assemblies run over the lower control arm and then gets plugged into the hub bearings. you need to cut the harness about six or seven inches and replace ti with new one and problem is solved. you can buy the harness from autozone around $30.

I've been having the same problems as everyone else. My mechanic couldn't hear the noise when I asked him to look at it. But now I'm having it non stop when I make any sort of left turn. My boyfriend was driving once and took a fast left to turn and we almost got t boned because it hesitates and grinds so much. It always lights up now. At least 5-10 times of driving it. Hoping the guys advice above me is true and can get it fixed for $30!

I own 3 impalas, a 2006, which the pr evious owner replaced the hubs 2 times in the fronts and I replaced them once because of all the same problems people been complaining with above. My 2012 started the same noises and power problems with the messages coming up on the screen too. I cleaned the connections with contact cleaner at the harnesses and inspected the wiring but didn't see any thing obvious. It did help some, but the problem isn[t solved because it still happens from time to time. My 2011 impala only has 30K miles and I don't drive it much. But, on 3 different occasions, I did get the same messages and power down problem happen with it. But when I turn the car off for a while, it clears the messages and they are off until the next time. I do believe it's going to get worse just like the other two cars are. I am a Chevy man, but..after all this with every one I own...I may think twice before buying another one. Especially if GM doesn't make things right with the issue. Recall and fix the problem GM !!! I will be calling the numbers you people supplied on this page and let them know about all three of my impalas having the same problem !

bought a 2014 Impala wreck, hit in the right rear, fixed it and had all these warning lights service sabili-trac and the other two for the car had been sitting for 2 years in the auto wrecking lot. I am lucky, I only had to fill up the break fluid resovoir under the hood, and all the warnings went away. So, the first thing is to fill up the brake fluid holder, and kiss your rabbit foot.

Spend all that money on mines and it was a $40 part. It's the wire harness. Have to make sure it's long enough because the wires will pull and you will have the same problem. Finally.

I also have 2013 Impala, sometimes while I'm driving the traction light blinks like it senses the vehicle is slipping but actually it is not! the vehicle is moving on a dry asphalt, why does this happen? Is it there a problem with the speed sensors or the wiring or the whole assembly?

I have a 2012 Chevrolet LT with 58000 miles which I bought new from A GM dealer here in my hometown. Had no problems until my WARRENTY expired. The most all the above problems began to happen. In June 2020 I took it to a local neck. And they put it on the computer for checkout. Changed out left front hub assembly. Lasted about 30 days . Now the problem seem to be worse. When you go to make a left or right turn it will almost stall out. Hear a grinding coming from right front. Intend to advise GM here plus call the no.above. From this point forward I see no need to spend all this money when you get no results. So intend to join the claim group. Thank for all the above info. KennyB
