I have a 04 explorer xls 4x4 4.0 sohc it starts
barely idles extremely rough dies then won't
start, this happened when I left work was
driving fine then died the check engine light
flashed on my way to work I didn't think
anything of it any idea what happened

yah if an engine light flashes ALWAYS pull over asap. but i would try seeing if your sparkplug disengages

Always start with hooking the car up to an OBD (on board diagnostics.) Most auto part stores offer this quick service free of charge. Just because your check engine light doesn't stay on doesn't mean that there isn't an issue in the engine. If it comes up with nothing, start with a tune- up. Change spark plugs, plug wires, fuel and air filters, and add some fuel injector cleaner to the fuel. Then, look into the fuel pump, vacuum lines, and IAC (idle air control.) The Explorer is notorious for vacuum line issues because of the o-rings on those black plastic intakes.

check 02 sensor after the cat. driver side back. check fuse 41 if blown
