Can I leave the blower motor resistor dangling?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I need to replace the blower motor resistor. On a lot of cars this is a supremely easy switch-out, but on my 2012 Fiesta it's almost impossible to remove the old resistor without dismantling the dashboard. How bad would it be to simply plug the new one into the wiring harness and leave it dangling?

Hey, thanks for the quick and thorough response! I gave it a try -- it took only about three minutes for the familiar and unwelcome aroma of too-hot electronics to waft into the passenger compartment. So I bit the bullet and did the job right.
