Jeep XJ Cherokee overheating

Asked by 2000xj Aug 16, 2015 at 07:28 PM about the 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4-Door 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee (XJ) 4.0 with
156K miles.  It enjoys overheating at stop
lights only. It is more likely to overheat with
the AC running, but it will eventually
overheat with the AC off if it idles without
airflow for too long. It has never overheated
while moving.  One day, it got so hot that it
cracked the radiator which led to me
swapping every part in the system. So far,
Ive changed the radiator, upper and lower
hoses, thermostat (185°), thermostat
housing, waterpump, and fan clutch.  Ann
new coolant and burped the system but its
still overheating.  There is no oil in the
coolant, no coolant in the oil, and no blue or
white smoke coming from the exhaust
(pretty sure heads/gaskets are fine).  So
what gives? Am I missing something.
Thermostat tests pass as well.

Flush cooling system with Prestone Radiator and Cooling System flush. Sounds like there is some blockage in the engines cooling system passages.

I'll give that a try. I've thought about the posibility of blocked engine cooling passages, but then dismissed the idea as the engine does/will cool when driving. Seems that an engine would never maintain a cool/normal temp without cooling passages.

stop wasting your money . all 4.0l engines in Cherokee sports run hot . the computer is set to turn on electric fan when it gets to 215 at front of engine head . over ride electric fan mount a pilot/toggle switch left side of the running light switch .i did and i never ran hot again on heated days with a/c on or off . the second option is to screw shut the clutch fan . you must drill three holes in near perfect position to avoid vibration , quality s/s screws with nylon tipped nuts to prevent nuts from backing off . you will hear a bit of a growl but the fan is kicking ass all the time . I prefer the switch/electric fan over ride method .I do not give detail instructions, sorry
