Stripped screw

Asked by Oso_Classyc Oct 11, 2017 at 03:24 AM about the 2005 Dodge Magnum R/T RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Ok so I wanted your advice. I attempted to
change my thermostat. There's 2 screws in
that housing unit. the first screw came off
the second screw broke off. So half of that
screw is still stuck in there.
Any advice on what I can do to remove the
rest of the screw that's stuck in there
without  making this matter worse?

I was told to use a small drill bit to drill the
rest of the screw and try to scrape out the
rest of it.

I could use some advice what can I do?

If the rest is broke off down in the hole and you did get the other on out you should be able to get top of housing off you may be able to get vise-grips on it to get it out. Otherwise if is broken off down deeper then it can be drilled but here is the main concern, the intake is aluminum and the bolt is steel which means the drill bit will wonder off into the weaker easier to drill metal. You would be better off to remove the intake and use a drill press. Slightly smaller bit then the bolt shaft, mark the length of the other bolt and broken bolt and measure the difference and mark on the drill bit this measurement and do not go deeper and go in the same angle as bolt is and do not cut into the threads. then use a chaser tap set or use drill bit in reverse but put pressure on at an angle to get end of bit to push against the rest of bolt and see if it comes out or use the chaser and tap bits to grab it and turn it out or reverse threaded bolts that just fit in it or use back out tool for broken bolts. either way you do not want to mess up the threads if you do you will need to tap in new ons and use a larger bolt if there is room or get another intake and new bolts and do not use thread lock.

Just have it towed to a mechanic- what you should have done in the first place-
